Chapter 2:begins with Ponyboy arriving to school the next day feeling tired and disconnected. He meets up with his close friend Johnny, another greaser who has a stressful household and often experiences abuse from his a******ic parents. During lunch break ponyboy and Johnny face a group of socs, who threaten them The situation intensifies when Bob and Ponyboy begin to fight but the fight is split up before it turns really violent.
in the park they meet Cherry, a soc girl who shows understanding and caring towards Ponyboy and Johnny. She admits the socs are not perfect and that she is tired of the constant hate between the two groups The chapter ends with Ponyboy thinking on Cherry's unexpected kindness and wondering if it could mean the possibility of peace between the greasers and the socs.
